In order to raise awareness and strengthen compliance with OSH standards, the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. 02 in collaboration with the Batanes Isles Food and Accommodation Services Assoc, Inc. conducted a Training Course for Safety Officer I in Mahatao, Batanes last March 5, 2020.

 The training aimed to prepare participants: SETUP beneficiaries, government employees and other small businesses, to formulate and implement occupational safety and health programs in their respective workplace. It also aimed to improve and strengthen workplace safety and health practices by developing the skills of safety practitioners and ensure that an OSH system is properly practiced and extended to workers.

In her opening remarks, ARD Virginia Bilgera reiterated the importance of such training for the compliance of small businesses towards the goal of advancing into industry level. She also urged participants to be a medium to advocate work safety.

Resource Speaker from PEME Consultancy Inc., Engr. Neal Martinez, is a Mechanical Engineer who worked for different companies in and outside the Philippines as a safety officer, hence his undisputed expertise on this field. During the duration of the training, he shared his personal experiences as samples on the different topics he discussed. Topics include: Understanding OSH, Knowing Safety Hazards and Controls, Hazards Identification, Risk Assessment and Control, Workplace Emergency Preparedness, Administrative OSH Requirements, and Capacity Building of Trainers on OSH.

Meanwhile, PD Nora Garcia thanked the participants for coming despite the bad weather, hoping that they will be able to apply whatever they have learned from the training.

At the end of the of the training course, participants were asked to oath for “A Safety Commitment and Covenant”, which will promote safe working culture.  A certificate for the accreditation of Safety Officer I was given to participants as per DOLE’s requirement pursuant to the Occupational Safety and Health Standards (OSHS).
